Going back to school can be stressful for everyone in the family. New faces, new rooms, new teachers, etc.
For some children and teens (and adults too!), change can be incredibly difficult to move through.
Sometimes it can be useful to sit down with your child or teen and discuss what might feel scary or difficult about returning to school and figuring out solutions together to help to downregulate distress.
One such tool that can be helpful for your child or teen is to write a letter to the new teacher introducing the child, including information about the child’s personality, and concerns they have, anything they may need or like support with, and so fourth. Below are some headings you might wish to use in writing a letter to give to your new teacher 😊
Sometimes just giving your child or teen’s anxiety a plan (such as the letter above/attached that you complete together with your child/teen), in and of itself, can drastically help to reduce distress coinciding with the annual “return-to-school” anxiety.
We hope this has been helpful for you 😊
